In addition to presentations made in school classrooms, various field events such as Jake's Day, and "adventure" days such as the Kentucky Farm Bureau's highly successful "Ag Adventures Day", the District hosts three "CONSERVATION EDUCATION TOURS" during the school year. Sixth graders from all the county's schools are invited to learn from professionals in environmentally related fields from soils to water quality, pollenators to raptors, and more.
High school students can participate in the JUNIOR CONSERVATION BOARD which is a school-authorized club activity. The "Junior Board", as it is called, assists at the Harvest Day celebration and any of the projects where they can be of help. The Junior board assists during the Conservation Education Tours by running the popular training activity "Oh, Deer", collecting recycling from our senior citizens to be taken to the recycling center, and managing a recycling operation at the high school. Planned for later this year is a Rain Garden to be installed at the Conservation District's office. This will be an ongoing project for them to install, improve, and maintain while the Garden serves as an example of what a rain gfarden is, how it functions, and what its benefits are to landowners and the community.
After training during the school year, the ENVIROTHON team, or teams, compete regionally in the Kentucky Division of Conservation's annual Enviorthon competition. The teams are comprised of high school students who study in depth the fields of forestry, wildlife, aquatics, soil science, and more. Regional competitions can lead to the state competition which can lead to the national competition. Students work hard to learn the diverse material and, win or lose, become citizens acutely aware of their environment and our impact on it.
